Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) is one of the flagship programmes of the Government of India which aims to achieve the objective of “Housing for All” by 2024 by providing 2.95 crore pucca houses with basic amenities to all homeless households and families living in kutcha and dilapidated houses in rural areas in convergence with other schemes.

Towards the upliftment of rural India, this scheme which was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister in the year 2016, aims to ensure not only housing but also all basic amenities along with housing.  Under  Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, beneficiaries  also  get  the benefit of  90-95 days of wages to build their houses under MGNREGA as well as toilets in PMAY-G houses in coordination with other welfare schemes such as Swachh India Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, etc. Clean fuel and electricity facilities are being ensured. Under the scheme, women members of PMAY-G families are also being included in Self Help Groups (SHGs) through the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), so that rural women get better livelihood opportunities. In the next five years, provision will also be made to install solar roof tops to the beneficiaries through convergence with PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.

Under the scheme, the earlier target was 2.95 crore Pucca houses, against which 100% houses have been sanctioned on time and 2.66 crore houses have been completed. In the last ten years, 3.42 crore houses have been constructed under rural housing scheme.

Realizing the success of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin and the need for more rural households, the scheme has been continued and construction of additional 2  crore houses has been approved in the coming 5 years. These 2 crore new houses  will be built in the next five years at a cost of more than Rs  3.06 lakh crore. Out of the newly approved target of 2 crore, an amount of Rs.  31,73,016 crore has been released to the 16 States by the Ministry.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin is not just a scheme but a hope for the common citizen. It is the basis for  respect, empowerment and building a better future.  This scheme reflects the commitment of Hon’ble Prime Minister to the development of rural India.
