Prosperity from Potato – A round table congregation to delve into opportunities and challenges in the Potato value chain in Uttar Pradesh. Prepare a blue print for short, mid & long term actionable for unleashing potential from Potato. 

New Delhi, India – September 18, 2024: A round table conference, a landmark initiative for developing value chain of Potato in Uttar Pradesh, named “Prosperity from Potato” took place today at the India International Centre, New Delhi. This congregation was co-organised by Transform Rural India and Forum of Enterprises for Equitable Development (FEED) and various opportunities were identified for the Potato value chain in Uttar Pradesh. Various value chain actors such as Government officials from Agricultural Departments, Big Buyers and Private players, Cold Chain Association, Central Potato Research Institute, NRLM and Community – FPOs & Champion Farmers expressed their views and helped in preparing a Strategic Blueprint for Potato in U.P.

The key discussion pointers were around –

  1. Production Enhancements:
  • Seed Quality and Supply: Importance of improving seed quality and availability. Recommendations for establishing seed production and distribution networks.
  • Best Practices: Adoption of advanced agricultural practices, including pest management, soil health, and crop rotation techniques.
  • Technology Integration: Encouragement of modern farming technologies and precision agriculture to enhance yields and efficiency.
  1. Processing and Value Addition:
  • Infrastructure Development: Need for investment in potato processing infrastructure, including cold storage facilities and processing units.
  • Product Diversification: Opportunities for creating value-added products such as chips, fries, and dehydrated potato products.
  • Quality Standards: Implementation of quality control measures to ensure consistency and safety in processed products.
  1. Marketing and Supply Chain Management:
  • Market Access: Strategies for improving market access and expanding domestic and international markets.
  • Supply Chain Optimization: Enhancing logistics and supply chain management to reduce post-harvest losses and improve efficiency.
  • Consumer Awareness: Initiatives to educate consumers about the benefits of potato products.
  1. Policy and Support Mechanisms:
  • Government Support: Discussion on current policies and the need for supportive measures, including subsidies, loans, and insurance schemes.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between government bodies and private sector players to drive the value chain development.
  • Capacity Building: Training and capacity-building programs for farmers and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of strategies.
