Chennai, March 2024 – Amma’s Pride invites members of the press to experience a groundbreaking community event on March 29th at Alliance Française, Chennai, 4PM TO 8PM, the first-ever Path to Pride impact event, leading up to Trans Day of Visibility (March 31st). This event includes an exciting opening act with lyricist Jay, a film screening, a story circle workshop and an interactive art experience. An event open to all.
This is not just a film screening. It’s a transformative experience, bringing together over 120+ attendees for an evening of storytelling, conversation, and deep reflection. Through an intimate StoryCircle workshop and an interactive Heart & Head Commitment art experience, this event will be a safe space for open conversations about trans and queer family and community acceptance-conversations that rarely take place in public forums.
The event will open with a special performance by Lyricist Jay – a queer artist, parent, and storyteller known for blending poetry, music, and humor in unexpected ways. Followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary film Amma’s Pride, and Q&A discussion with the film’s participants- Srija, her mother Valli, and her partner Arun, whose powerful story of love, resilience, and legal triumph has resonated with audiences worldwide. Directed by Shiva Krish, Amma’s Pride follows Valli’s journey as she supports her trans daughter, Srija, through love, marriage, and the fight for its legal recognition in Tamil Nadu.
A First-of-Its-Kind Event in Chennai
- The Power of Storytelling: The StoryCircle workshop, led by facilitators, will break attendees into small groups of 8-10, fostering safe, meaningful dialogue between trans folks and allies.
- A Physical Commitment to Change: The event will close with the Heart & Head Commitment art experience, where participants will express their personal commitments to supporting trans and queer individuals, whether emotional (heart) or action-driven (head).
- Bridging Communities & Driving Change: This event isn’t just about awareness—it’s about shifting mindsets, sparking long-term allyship, and creating ripples that will extend beyond this space.
Path to Pride: A Nationwide Impact Tour
Chennai marks the launch of the Path to Pride impact campaign, a five-city tour designed to foster deeper conversations on trans and queer rights across India. The next event will take place in Kolkata on May 4th, followed by Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi in the coming months.
Amma’s Pride had its India premiere at IFFI Goa in November last year as the only LGBTQ+ film in the entire Indian Panorama lineup and has screened at 20+ events worldwide in 2024, including at five Oscar-qualifying film festivals. This impact tour builds on the film’s global momentum, bringing its urgent and deeply personal story directly to the communities it hopes to reach.
