“Pastoral care at Shrewsbury isn’t just a system; it is a promise that every child is offered a nurturing community – A place they can call home,” remarks Peter Willett, Deputy Head of Pastoral at Shrewsbury International School India
Pastoral care embodies the belief that education extends beyond academic instruction, and pupils learn best when they feel happy, valued and genuinely cared for. Shrewsbury International School India brings this philosophy to life with a distinguished boarding experience in Central India, opening its doors to grades 6–12 in Madhya Pradesh’s capital, Bhopal, this August.
Recognising that adolescence plays a pivotal role in shaping a student’s future, Shrewsbury International School India embeds pastoral care into every aspect of its daily routine. Holistic well‑being is not an afterthought, but a priority – with an equal emphasis placed on personal growth and social development alongside academic achievement.

“With a close-knit house system and dedicated staff support, pastoral care at Shrewsbury isn’t just a system; it is a promise that every child is offered a nurturing community – A place they can call home,” remarks Peter Willett, Deputy Head – Pastoral.
Elaborating upon the boarding environment on-campus, he says, “We believe that each pupil deserves to be seen and supported at every step. Each day, our housemasters will conduct well‑being check‑ins, and every pupil will be paired with a personal tutor who helps with their academic progress and any personal challenges. Counselling will also be available to those who need. This consistent warm approach helps new arrivals – both from India and overseas – find their feet quickly, forging a genuine sense of belonging.”
In addition to engaging in super-curricular activities of choice on-campus, pupils at Shrewsbury will also have weekly outings to places of interest – ensuring that they have the space to learn, relax and connect.
“Each boarding house has thoughtfully-designed communal spaces including a well-stocked library, a dedicated kitchenette and an entertainment zone along with an indoor and outdoor seating lounge. Beyond the boarding houses, our pupils will be active participants in wide-ranging activities – from sports and aquatics to music rehearsals and drama productions. Weekly trips to local markets and cultural sites will further enrich their boarding school experience with opportunities for leisure and exploration,” adds Mr. Willett.
His vision echoes the 473-year-old British boarding tradition and values of Shrewsbury School UK, and upholds a belief in nurturing the whole person.
Shrewsbury International School India, the first South Asian campus of Shrewsbury School UK, will welcome its first batch of students from August 8 onwards. The school follows the British National Curriculum, preparing pupils for the Cambridge International IGCSE Examinations and A-Level programmes.
