A Hindu man was brutally lynched by a mob on the night of December 18 in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka Upazila, following allegations of blasphemy. The incident occurred in the Dubalia Para area of Square Master Bari, leaving the local community in shock and raising concerns about law and order in the region.
The deceased has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a young man who worked at a local garment factory and had been living in the area as a tenant. According to Ripon Mia, duty officer at Bhaluka Police Station, a crowd accused Das of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Around 9 pm, the mob attacked him, beating him to death. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers later tied his body to a tree and set it on fire, in a shocking display of violence that has left residents traumatised.

Police were quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. Authorities later recovered Dipu Chandra Das’s body and sent it to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. The incident has sparked fear and outrage among local residents, particularly members of minority communities, who fear targeted attacks amid rising religious tensions.
“We are trying to trace his family members. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law once a case is filed,” Ripon Mia said. Officials have indicated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and attempting to identify those involved in the attack.
The lynching of Dipu Chandra Das comes at a time of heightened unrest in Bangladesh. Nationwide protests and violent incidents have surged following the death of radical political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot injuries while receiving treatment in Singapore. The incident involving Hadi, coupled with Dipu Chandra Das’s killing, has intensified political and religious tensions, fueling a wave of public anxiety and debate over communal harmony in the country.
This latest episode underscores the continuing challenges Bangladesh faces in maintaining law and order, protecting minority rights, and curbing mob violence fueled by allegations of blasphemy. The tragic death of Dipu Chandra Das highlights the dangerous consequences of mob justice and the urgent need for legal and societal reforms to safeguard human rights and communal harmony in the country.
