King George’s Medical University (KGMU), one of Uttar Pradesh’s most prestigious medical institutions, is at the centre of a serious controversy following allegations of “love jihad” and forced religious conversion against a resident doctor. The case has triggered administrative action, police investigation and heightened scrutiny by intelligence agencies, given the gravity and sensitivity of the accusations.
An FIR has been registered against the accused resident doctor, identified as Rameez Uddin Nayak, a student of the MD Pathology department at KGMU. He has been accused by a fellow doctor of sexually exploiting her by falsely promising marriage, coercing her to convert to Islam, blackmailing her with private photographs and videos, and mentally harassing her to the point that she allegedly attempted suicide.
Following the emergence of the allegations, KGMU administration initiated an internal inquiry and conducted preliminary questioning of both the accused doctor and the complainant. University officials confirmed that both parties were summoned to the campus and asked to submit documents and evidence related to the case.
Given the seriousness of the charges and their potential impact on student safety and the institution’s reputation, the university is in the process of constituting a formal inquiry committee comprising senior faculty members and administrative officials. The committee is expected to conduct a detailed and impartial probe into all aspects of the case.
Notably, the matter surfaced at a time when KGMU was hosting its convocation, yet officials said no leniency was shown despite the academic engagements. All relevant departments were alerted immediately and the details of resident doctors were sought as part of heightened internal monitoring.
KGMU authorities have confirmed that Rameez Uddin Nayak has been suspended with immediate effect and barred from entering the university campus pending the outcome of the investigation.
KGMU spokesperson Prof. K.K. Singh said the university treats such allegations with utmost seriousness.
“Upon receiving a written complaint, the university will follow due process. Student safety and dignity are our top priorities. A fair and rule-based inquiry will be conducted and strict action will be taken if the allegations are found to be true,” he said.
According to the FIR, the complainant, who is also an MD Pathology student at KGMU and originally hails from Howrah in West Bengal, alleged that Rameez befriended her and later entered into a physical relationship by claiming that he was unmarried and intended to marry her.
When she began insisting on formalising the relationship, the accused imposed a condition that she must convert to Islam in order to marry him. A chance discovery later revealed that Rameez was already married and living with his wife in Lucknow’s Thakurganj area.
After learning the truth, the complainant reportedly tried to distance herself from him, following which he allegedly threatened to make her private photos and videos viral.
The complainant has further alleged that she became pregnant in September and that the accused forced her to undergo a medical abortion against her will. Despite this, she claimed, the accused continued to exploit her physically while concealing his marital status and repeatedly renewing false promises of marriage.
Police officials said these allegations significantly increase the seriousness of the case, as they involve not only sexual exploitation but also coercion, deception and criminal intimidation.
According to the complaint, the alleged pressure to convert and continued harassment caused severe mental trauma to the victim. On December 17, she allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a large quantity of sleeping pills. Her friends rushed her to a trauma centre, where doctors managed to save her life.
After being discharged, the woman informed her family. With the support of her father, she approached the police and lodged a formal complaint, leading to the registration of the FIR.
Police said the case has been registered under multiple sections related to sexual exploitation, attempted forced religious conversion, cheating, criminal intimidation, threats to circulate private images, and abetment to suicide.
The accused doctor is currently absconding and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him. Law enforcement agencies are also examining his past conduct and contacts to determine whether the case is linked to a broader pattern or network.
Given the allegations of forced conversion and the sensitive nature of the case, intelligence agencies have also become active. Sources said agencies are examining whether there are earlier complaints or similar incidents involving the accused or others linked to him, and whether the case fits into a wider pattern.
According to official records, Rameez Uddin Nayak is a native of Khatima in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district. He completed his MBBS from Agra Medical College, qualified NEET PG 2023 and secured admission to the MD Pathology programme at KGMU under the Backward Class Open Category.
The complainant is also enrolled in the MD Pathology programme at KGMU and is originally from Howrah, West Bengal.
As investigations continue, all eyes are on the KGMU administration’s next steps, including the findings of the inquiry committee and the outcome of the police probe. The case has raised serious questions about campus safety, student welfare and the handling of sensitive issues such as coercion and religious conversion within elite educational institutions.
