An ancient stone sculpture of Durga Mata was recovered from the River Jhelum in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and has now been formally handed over to the Archaeology Wing for preservation and conservation.
The sculpture was discovered on December 25, 2025, by a local fisherman, Nazir Ahmad Latoo, son of Ghulam Mohammad Latoo, a resident of Shaltang/Zogyar. While fishing in the River Jhelum, Latoo came across the stone murti and immediately informed Police Station Sheeri, demonstrating commendable civic responsibility.
Upon receiving the information, Baramulla Police promptly took the sculpture into safe custody at Police Station Sheeri to ensure its protection. Recognising the historical and archaeological importance of the find, the police coordinated with the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K, for further action.
On December 26, 2025, following due procedure and official directions, the sculpture identified by experts as Ma Durga was formally handed over by Baramulla Police to officials of the Archaeology Wing, Srinagar. The transfer was conducted through a proper handover and takeover process to ensure transparency and safeguarding of the artefact.
Officials said the sculpture will now undergo detailed examination, documentation, and conservation to determine its age, historical context, and artistic significance. Such discoveries provide valuable insights into the religious and cultural history of the Kashmir Valley, which has long been a centre of ancient art and civilisation.
Baramulla Police, in a statement, reiterated its firm commitment to the protection of cultural and historical heritage. The police also urged citizens to remain vigilant and to promptly inform authorities if they come across any objects of archaeological or historical importance.
