JAMMU: A local cricket match in Jammu has triggered a major political and security controversy after cricketer Furqan Bhat took the field wearing a Palestinian flag on his helmet, prompting swift police action and sharp public backlash over the display of a foreign political symbol in a sporting event held on Indian soil.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Day during a match between JK11 Kings and Jammu Trailblazers in the J&K Champions League. Images and videos of Bhat wearing the Palestinian flag quickly went viral, drawing criticism from several quarters for what was seen as a deliberate and provocative act, especially in a region as sensitive as J&K.
Acting promptly, Jammu Police summoned Furqan Bhat to Domana police station for questioning. Tournament organiser Zahid Bhat has also been called in as part of the enquiry to determine whether the act was premeditated and whether organisers failed to enforce basic guidelines on conduct and symbols during the match.
Senior police officials confirmed that a preliminary enquiry has been ordered under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and must be completed within 14 days. Permission for the enquiry is to be formally sought from a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP). Officials clarified that a preliminary enquiry is initiated when there is a prima facie indication of offences that may attract punishment ranging between three and seven years of imprisonment.
While no FIR has been registered so far, police sources said the enquiry will focus on the intent behind displaying a foreign political flag, the circumstances under which it was allowed, and whether it could amount to disturbing public order or hurting national sentiment.
The J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) has distanced itself from the controversy, stating clearly that the J&K Champions League is not a recognised tournament and does not operate under its authority or supervision. “We have nothing to do with this league. It is not affiliated to the JKCA,” an association official said.
