Kerala: Sabarimala pilgrimage area in eye of storm after green Islamic flag appears inside

THIRUVANANTHPURAM: Sabarimala, one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres in India, has found itself at the centre of a fresh controversy after a green flag bearing a crescent and star was reportedly spotted inside the Nadappandal, a crucial resting and movement area for Ayyappa devotees. Malayalam media reports and visuals shared by multiple YouTube channels show the flag tied to an iron pillar supporting the pandal, even as massive crowds of devotees continued their pilgrimage uninterrupted.

The Nadappandal is a high-security zone during the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, with central armed police forces deployed and constant administrative monitoring due to the movement of crores of devotees. The appearance of a religious flag—particularly one associated with Islamic symbolism and resembling flags linked to Pakistan or the Indian Union Muslim League—has therefore sparked widespread concern and debate.

The incident assumes added significance in the context of the Kerala government’s policies toward Hindu religious expression. Devaswom Boards in the state, many of them under the control of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), have in the past imposed restrictions on the display of saffron flags and decorations in temples under their administration. There have been documented instances where police removed saffron banners or symbols from temple premises, citing secular norms. Last year, Organiser reported similar incidents that triggered protests by Hindu organisations.

Critics argue that the presence of a green flag inside Sabarimala’s pilgrimage infrastructure highlights a glaring inconsistency in the application of secular principles. They question how such a flag could be allowed—or overlooked—in a tightly controlled religious space, while traditional Hindu symbols are actively discouraged or removed from temples.

Notably, despite the provocation, Ayyappa devotees have not resorted to agitation, protest, or violence. Observers, however, have raised a counterfactual question: would a similar display of a Hindu symbol inside the premises of a mosque or church have been tolerated? Many believe such an incident would have led to immediate political uproar, with parties across the INDI Alliance—both the ruling LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF)—raising alarms about threats to secularism.
