Murshidabad: On January 10, 47-year-old Booth Level Officer (BLO) Hamimul Islam, who was also the headmaster of a state-funded boys’ secondary school in Paikmarichar, Murshidabad, committed suicide. His body was found at the school premises.

On January 12, authorities took All India Trinamool Congress (AITC/TMC) leader Bullet Khan into custody. Islam’s wife had accused Khan in a complaint, alleging that he had threatened her husband and failed to return a loaned sum of Rs 20 lakh.

Initially, TMC leaders in Murshidabad claimed that Islam’s death was caused by pressure from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and staged a protest outside the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kolkata. However, police investigations revealed that Islam had been distressed over the unpaid debt, and Khan had allegedly threatened to kill him, events that reportedly led to his suicide. Khan has been charged with aiding and abetting suicide.

A senior official said, “A person named Bullet Khan has been arrested. He is known to be a Trinamool Congress worker. An FIR has been filed based on complaints from the deceased’s family. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya condemned the TMC for politicising the tragedy and wrongly linking it to the SIR drive. He said that immediately after the incident, “Mamata Banerjee’s ecosystem of habitual liars and disinformation peddlers pushed the narrative that he had died due to SIR-related pressure.” He added that the TMC organized a protest outside the Election Commission office in Kolkata and that “large sections of a compromised media echoed this manufactured version without asking questions,” criticizing the party for distorting facts to suit its political agenda.

BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar also commented on the development, saying, “This is the real face of the Trinamool Congress. They are misleading people about the death of BLOs and intimidating them through deception.”

Hamimul Islam hailed from Alaipur village in Bhagwangola Block II, while Bullet Khan resides in Murshidabad near the Ranitala police station. The Lalbagh sub-divisional court heard the case and remanded Khan to police custody for five days.
