In recent years, there has been a deeply concerning rise in reports regarding the desecration of Hindu places of worship through highly offensive acts, including urination, defecation, and other lewd conduct within Mandir premises. Such incidents, often allegedly perpetrated by radicalised individuals or religious extremists, are not merely acts of vandalism but are perceived as targeted strikes against the sanctity of the Hindu faith and the cultural dignity of the community. These provocations have sparked widespread outrage across the country, leading to urgent demands for stricter security measures around religious sites and more stringent legal action against those attempting to disturb communal harmony through such sacrilegious behaviour.
This report is based on 19 major incidents occurring between 2021 and 2026 involving the desecration of Hindu temples through acts of defecation, urination, and lewd behaviour by religious extremists.
Desecration of Katta Maisamma Mandir in Hyderabad
In a deeply provocative incident on January 10, 2026, a 26-year-old man identified as Altaf, a resident of Bidar, Karnataka, was arrested for desecrating the Katta Maisamma Mandir in Safilguda, Hyderabad. According to police reports, the accused entered the temple premises and committed the sacrilegious act of urinating directly in front of the deity’s murti. Following the incident, Neredmet police registered a case and took Altaf into custody. He was subsequently produced before a court and sent to judicial remand as local residents expressed intense outrage over the deliberate insult to their religious sentiments.
Clerics Booked for Defiling Mandir Premises in Fatehabad
Tensions rose in the Sunder Nagar area of Tohana, Haryana, on December 8, 2025, after religious clerics associated with a nearby madrasa and mosque were accused of deliberately spitting and urinating near the Gorakhnath Mandir. Local Hindu organisations filed a formal complaint with the City Police Station, labelling the act as a pre-planned attempt to hurt religious feelings. Acting on the grievance, the Fatehabad police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Billu Pradhan and a local cleric under Sections 299, 3(5), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to ensure legal accountability for the desecration.
Desecration of Shivalinga in Bilaspur Leads to Protests

Arrests in Pune Following Profanation of Maa Annapurna murti
In a highly sensitive incident in Pune’s Paud village on May 2, 2025, a 19-year-old youth named Chand Sheikh was caught on video urinating on the idol of Maa Annapurna inside the Nageshwar Mandir. When local witnesses confronted him, an accomplice named Naushad Sheikh allegedly mocked the devotees, claiming they could not harm him. Based on a complaint by resident Shivaji Waghwale, the Pune police took both individuals into custody. The viral nature of the video sparked significant anger, leading to a swift police response to maintain law and order in the region.
Harassment and Defilement at a Jodhpur Mandir
On April 30, 2025, in the Dev Nagar area of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, two men, identified as Nadeem and an associate, were detained for urinating on a Mandir wall. In response, Dev Nagar police took Nadeem and his associates into custody to investigate both the desecration and the harassment of the female witness.

A man named Imran Sukkha caused widespread resentment in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, on January 30, 2025, by recording a video where he was seen placing his foot on a religious symbol (Shivalinga) inside a Mandir. Members of the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad intervened after the video surfaced online, leading to a formal complaint at the local station. The police acted promptly to arrest the individual for his derogatory actions and for promoting content that targeted Hindu religious beliefs.
Arrest of Youth for Spitting Inside Sitapur Mandir
In Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, a man named Shamshad was arrested on October 20, 2024, following a sacrilegious act at a prominent Mandir located at the Sadarpur main intersection. Social media outrage erupted in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on October 7, 2024, after a video circulated showing a youth urinating on the exterior wall of a Hanuman Mandir on MG Road. Recognising the potential for communal tension, the Indore police identified the minor involved and registered a case under Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code on October 8. The authorities took the individual into custody and appealed to the public to maintain calm while the legal process unfolded.
Violent Assault Following Confrontation over Mandir Desecration in Lucknow
A confrontation over a sacrilegious act turned violent in the Rajajipuram area of Lucknow on July 30, 2024. A local resident, Dilip Singh, confronted a youth named Nadeem for urinating on a Mandir wall. In retaliation, Nadeem returned with a group of accomplices – identified as Mohammad Alaihissalam, Mohammad Nafees, and Babu – armed with sticks and iron rods to launch a brutal assault on Singh.
