2026 Assembly Polls: ECI Orders Border Lockdown and High Vigilance to Ensure Violence-Free Voting

NEW DELHI – In a final push to ensure the integrity of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) held a marathon review meeting today, March 24, 2026. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shri Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. S.S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, met with top officials from five poll-bound states and 12 neighboring territories to finalize security and enforcement protocols.

Strict Directives for “Clean” Elections

The Commission issued a stern “zero-tolerance” warning against electoral malpractices. The primary focus of the meeting was to guarantee that the elections remain:

  • Violence-Free: Preventing any form of voter intimidation or physical disruption.

  • Inducement-Free: Cracking down on the flow of illegal cash, liquor, narcotics, and freebies.

  • Coordinated: Ensuring seamless communication between the poll-going states—Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal—and their neighbors.

Border Sealing and Intelligence Surge

A significant portion of the review focused on bordering districts. The ECI directed the sealing of inter-state borders during the “silence period” before polling to prevent the movement of anti-social elements.

Heads of major central agencies, including the NCB, Income Tax Department, ED, and DRI, were instructed to intensify “actionable intelligence” operations. The Commission has already deployed over 25 lakh election officials and 1,111 Central Observers to act as its eyes and ears on the ground.
