The Office of the Director General of Civil\u00a0Aviation\u00a0(DGCA) issued a circular in June 2024 advising all stakeholders in the\u00a0aviation\u00a0industry to increase the number of\u00a0women\u00a0in various positions by 25 per cent. This initiative is timely, considering the recent efforts by the regulatory body to promote\u00a0women\u2019s enrolment in various jobs, including pilots. In 2023, a total of 1,622 commercial pilot licenses were issued, of which 294 were issued to\u00a0women\u00a0(18pc of the total). At present,\u00a0women\u00a0pilots make up approximately 14 per cent of the total flight crew strength employed by various Indian scheduled and non-scheduled operators.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On Independence Day, various industry leaders are extending their commitment to support India\u2019s initiatives to promote\u00a0more\u00a0gender-inclusive\u00a0 Jaideep\u00a0Mirchandani, the group chairman of global\u00a0aviation\u00a0major Sky One, echoed this view, stating that encouraging\u00a0gender\u00a0equity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields will inspire\u00a0more\u00a0women\u00a0to explore opportunities in industries like\u00a0aviation\u00a0which have been traditionally male-dominated.<\/p>\n \u201cDeveloping partnerships with educational institutions and training institutes will help bring\u00a0more\u00a0women\u00a0into\u00a0aviation \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To promote a suitable work environment for\u00a0women, the\u00a0DGCA\u00a0directive also seeks the implementation of strategies to minimise bias. \u201cThe HR policies must also be devoid of\u00a0gender\u00a0pay gaps. There should not be any disparities in compensation plans either. Flexible work hours and job-sharing\u00a0can\u00a0improve the work-life balance and job satisfaction among\u00a0women, which will help in retaining the existing female\u00a0workforce. There should also be clear-cut policies to address any sort of harassment at workplaces,\u201d adds Mr\u00a0Mirchandani.<\/span><\/p>\n Mentorship and sponsorship programmes, he\u00a0says, will empower\u00a0women\u00a0with the skills and knowledge to advance their careers. \u201cWomen\u00a0in\u00a0aviation\u00a0bring unique perspectives and diverse skill sets to the table.
