While classical physics is a set of laws and equations that describe how ordinary objects behave, quantum physics describes the world of atoms and smaller objects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Soham Sen and Prof. Sunandan Gangopadhyay of the Department of Astrophysics (IIA) and High Energy Physics at S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, have been engaged in finding signatures of quantum gravity in terrestrial systems which would lead towards a better understanding of a complete quantum theory of gravity, a fundamental problem which is unsolved from the time of Albert Einstein.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quantum gravity (QG) is a field of\u00a0<a title=\"Theoretical physics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theoretical_physics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theoretical physics<\/a>\u00a0that seeks to describe gravity according to the principles of\u00a0<a title=\"Quantum mechanics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_mechanics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quantum mechanics<\/a>. It deals with environments in which neither\u00a0<a title=\"Gravity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gravitational<\/a>\u00a0nor quantum effects can be ignored,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_gravity#cite_note-scholarpedia-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0such as in the vicinity of\u00a0<a title=\"Black holes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_holes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black holes<\/a>\u00a0or similar compact astrophysical objects, such as\u00a0<a title=\"Neutron stars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutron_stars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neutron stars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It has earlier been shown that\u00a0when the gravitational field is treated quantum mechanically, it induces fluctuations, or noise, in the lengths of the arms of gravitational wave detectors like LIGO\u2019s interferometer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The characteristics of the noise depend on the quantum state of the gravitational field. Detection of this fundamental noise would constitute direct evidence for the quantization of gravity and the existence of gravitons\u2014the connecting link between Gravitation and Quantum theory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taking forward works like this, Prof. Gangopadhyay and Mr. Soham Sen have examined the fate of freely falling bodies in a quantum gravitational field. Their calculations have obtained an\u00a0uncertainty relation between the position and momentum variables induced from the noise of gravitons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The uncertainty relation indicates a true quantum gravitational effect and the calculations clearly indicate that there is true coupling of the degrees of freedom of the particle with the quantized gravitational field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur derivation of the generalized uncertainty principle is robust in the sense that the result was obtained by taking into account the quantum nature of gravity\u201d, said Prof. Sunandan Gangopadhyay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Publication links:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Soham Sen and Sunandan Gangopadhyay, \u201cUncertainty principle from the noise of gravitons\u201d,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1140\/epjc\/s10052-024-12481-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eur.
