They are referred to by various names including romance scams, financial grooming scams, and \u201cpig butchering\u201d scams.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC\u2019s public service campaign features two animated videos \u2012 \u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/api.newsfilecorp.com\/redirect\/K8n5aSKvoX\">Don\u2019t Open the Door to Scammers<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/api.newsfilecorp.com\/redirect\/Eyp37iYAgM\">Let\u2019s Talk About Relationship Investment Scams<\/a>\u201d \u2012 and a <a href=\"https:\/\/api.newsfilecorp.com\/redirect\/x3e05f8Y5w\">resource page<\/a> about how relationship investment scams work, what investors should look out for, and how investors can protect themselves and others.<\/p>\n<p>Key takeaways for investors:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ignore messages from anyone they don\u2019t know and consider blocking or deleting them.Be wary of unsolicited investment opportunities, no matter how much they trust the person.If they suspect they may be caught up in a scam, stop communication with the individuals immediately, and do not give them any more money.<a href=\"https:\/\/api.newsfilecorp.com\/redirect\/7Wv5OUkv23\">Report the scam<\/a> to the SEC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cInvestor protection is a vital part of the SEC\u2019s mission. These kinds of frauds can be devastating and cause investors to lose billions of dollars every year,\u201d said Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda. \u201cI encourage investors to utilize the resources on our investor education website, <a href=\"https:\/\/api.newsfilecorp.com\/redirect\/eLBgaIvRY2\">Investor.gov<\/a>, to learn how to spot and avoid fraud to help protect their hard-earned money and life savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you receive an email or text message from a person, number, or email address you don\u2019t know or recognize, it\u2019s a red flag of fraud \u2014 especially if the message is vaguely worded or appears aimed at someone else,\u201d said Lori Schock, Director of the SEC\u2019s OIEA. \u201cDon\u2019t respond.
