Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2025 in Mumbai, RSS leader J Nandakumar said Bharat is a civilisational entity, eternal in nature, not a nation created in 1947 or by colonisers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the India Today Conclave in Mumbai 2025, J Nandakumar, All India Executive Member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said he was not surprised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s reference to the RSS while addressing the global audience on Independence Day this year. \u201cI\u2019m not surprised because being a swayamsevak, Narendra Modi as a Prime Minister when he was addressing the whole world, I\u2019d like to say, it is the 100th year of RSS, so it is not a surprising thing for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a swayamsevak, I was elated to hear such a comment from PM Modi but as a swayamsevak, the sangh is working not for any appreciation or congratulations from anyone in that sense,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Quoting a sangh geet, he said, \u201cPath ka antim lakshya nahi hai, singhasan chadhte jaana,\u201d which translates as \u201cThe ultimate goal of the path is not to stop, but to keep ascending the throne.\u201d He also recalled Atal Bihari Vajpayee\u2019s famous line, \u201cMujhe itna zyada unchaai mat do,\u201d meaning \u201cDo not place me on such a high pedestal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, that is the mentality of swayamsevaks, we are not expecting anything from the highest order or positions but yes, this is the 100th year, so PM Modi mentioned it, we are all happy and in a way it was an apt moment for him to say so to the whole world,\u201d Nandakumar added.<\/p>\n

On the broader idea of nationhood, he challenged the concept of \u201cnation building\u201d. \u201cI have got a big problem with this \u2018nation building\u2019. As far as RSS is concerned, our work is not nation making, it is nation reconstructing. The nation concept is a Eurocentric term, where the state or government and politics come first. As far as Bharat and RSS are concerned, we believe in rashtra punar nirman. Rashtra is a cultural, spiritual term, more a civilisational term. Rashtra has got a long history, time immemorial, our rashtra was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nandakumar referred to ancient texts to make his point. \u201cEven in the Vedas, there is mention of rashtra and even Bharat. In the Atharva Veda, there is a sloka: \u2018Bhadram icchhantah rishiyah, swar vidayah, tapo dikshaamupanshed agre. Tato raashtram, bala, ojasya jaatam, tadasmai devaupasannmantu\u2019. It means, our ancestors, the rishis, performed penance not for their own benefit or their family\u2019s, but for the universe. From that penance, rashtra was born, and the gods bowed before it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He linked this idea to Swami Vivekananda. \u201cIn modern times, Swami Vivekananda put it in simple English. What is this nation, what is this rashtra? Renunciation and service are the national ideals of this nation. If you want to strengthen this rashtra, you must strengthen it in those channels and the rest will take care of itself. In our Puranas, Vishnu Purana clearly mentions that this rashtra was there from time immemorial, and they even gave us the boundaries. \u2018Uttaram yat samudrasya himadreschaiva dakshinam. Varsham tad Bharatam naam Bharati yatra santatih\u2019 \u2014 the land stretching from the Himalayas to the southern seas is called Bharat, where the people are known as Bharati.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rejecting claims that India came into existence only during Mughal or British rule, he said, \u201cThis Bharat was there. Some say the Mughals united it, some say the British did. Some of our intellectuals have even had the audacity to claim that only after the British came here was India born. Once it was even written that before the British, India was just a landmass between Burma and Afghanistan. A friend of mine gave the perfect reply: if that was so, why did the British not call their company the East Landmass Between Burma and Afghanistan Company? Rashtra was there, it was not created after the British, nor on the midnight of August 14th or 15th 1947. The statement \u2018we are a nation in the making\u2019 was not correct. Rashtra was there, is here and will always be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

On history, he argued that the RSS sought to provide a truer account. \u201cIt is not rewriting history, it is putting history in the right perspective for the coming generations. When the British came, the first thing they did was rewriting history. James Mill wrote the history of British India and in the introduction itself he admitted he had never been to Bharat, did not know any of its languages, from Sanskrit to Tamil, yet claimed to write an objective history of this land.\u201d<\/p>\n

He criticised what he saw as a western approach to time. \u201cWesterners look at history as linear. For Bharat, time is cyclic. No one can say history started at one particular point. Swamiji himself said it is the duty of every true Bharatiya to write our history correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning to contemporary issues, he said India\u2019s economic and cultural strength gave it the confidence to assert itself. \u201cIt shall not be on the terms dictated by anyone, whether America, England or anyone else. Our nation is strong, we have economic power, no one can tell us to do things their way. Some say we must take their dairy products. What is happening to their dairy products? They treat cows as industrial objects, feeding them animal remains to increase milk, leading to cow-related diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWho gives them the right? Whether it is Trump or anyone, his comments are not binding on us. PM Modi has taken a strong stand, and RSS supports it. As far as trade and economic relations are concerned, our swadeshi must be promoted. Our startups are thriving, and this is good for Bharat. Bharat is showing signs of moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
