Union Agriculture & Farmers\u2019 Welfare Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan<\/b> stated in the Lok Sabha today that the Central Government, under PM Narendra Modi, has successfully provided a “strong security shield” to the nation\u2019s annadatta<\/i> (food providers). Addressing the House, he asserted that through historic interventions and record procurement, farmers\u2019 incomes have doubled<\/b>, with some cases even seeing a three-to-fourfold increase.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Security Shield\u2019 for Farmers<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Minister detailed five pillars that have transformed the agricultural landscape:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    Record MSP Procurement:<\/b> Moving beyond wheat and paddy, the government now actively procures pulses, oilseeds, and even perishable fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    PM-AASHA Scheme:<\/b> This initiative provides a safety net for crops whose market prices fall below the MSP through direct purchases and price difference payments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Revolutionary Crop Insurance:<\/b> Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)<\/b>, farmers have paid \u20b936,055 crore<\/b> in premiums but received a staggering \u20b91,92,477 crore<\/b> in claims.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Digital Relief (Farmer ID):<\/b> Citing Maharashtra as an example, the Minister noted that \u20b914,000 crore<\/b> was transferred directly to farmers’ accounts within just five days using digital IDs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Market Intervention:<\/b> For perishables like grapes and tomatoes, the government is now bearing transportation costs<\/b> to help farmers reach distant markets with better prices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Production on the Rise<\/b><\/h2>\n

    The Minister informed the House that agricultural production has surged by nearly 44%<\/b> in recent years. He emphasized that the government is no longer just “announcing” prices but ensuring they are realized on the ground, even implementing a 12% interest penalty<\/b> on insurance companies for delayed claim payments beyond 21 days.<\/p>\n
