The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has undergone significant updates as of 2026, most notably the universal inclusion of senior citizens. If you are looking to secure health coverage for your family or elderly parents, this guide provides the most current application path and policy corrections.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme is no longer just for the economically disadvantaged. Following the latest government expansion, a new category of “Ayushman Vaya Vandana” cards has been introduced, ensuring that every Indian citizen aged 70 and above is entitled to free treatment, regardless of their financial status.

2026 Policy Update: What has Changed?

Previously, eligibility was strictly tied to the SECC 2011 database. While those rules still apply to families, there are two critical “corrections” to common misconceptions in 2026:

  1. Universal Senior Citizen Coverage: If you are 70 years or older, you are automatically eligible. You do not need to be in the “poor” category.

  2. Top-up for Existing Families: If your family is already covered under PM-JAY, senior citizens (70+) in that family get an additional, exclusive ₹5 lakh top-up that they don’t have to share with the rest of the family.

Detailed Application Process

Step 1: Check Eligibility & Login

Visit the official NHA Beneficiary Portal.

  • Select the ‘Beneficiary’ login.

  • Enter your mobile number and verify via OTP.

Step 2: Search for Your Name

Search using your Aadhaar Number or Ration Card (Family ID).

  • For Seniors (70+): Use the “Ayushman Vaya Vandana” search toggle if you are not appearing in the standard list.

Step 3: Perform eKYC (The Most Critical Step)

The system now prefers Face Authentication or Iris Scan for better accuracy.

  • If using the Ayushman App, you can use your phone’s camera for “Face Auth.”

  • Ensure the live photo matches your Aadhaar records.

Step 4: Download the Card

Once the status changes from “Pending” to “Approved” (usually within 24 hours), click the download icon to get your PVC-ready PDF card.

Eligibility Table at a Glance (2026)

Category Eligibility Criteria Benefit Amount
General Families Listed in SECC 2011 / Low Income ₹5 Lakh (Family Floater)
Senior Citizens (70+) Any Indian Citizen aged 70+ ₹5 Lakh (Individual/Exclusive)
Existing PM-JAY Seniors Already in a covered family ₹5 Lakh (Family) + ₹5 Lakh (Top-up)

Essential Documents for 2026

  • Aadhaar Card: Mandatory for all (must be linked to an active mobile for OTP).

  • Ration Card: Required to link family members.

  • Active Mobile Number: To receive the digital card and updates.

Common Corrections & Troubleshooting

  • “Name Not Found”: If your name isn’t in the SECC list, check if your state has a linked scheme (like Chiranjeevi in Rajasthan or Maa in Gujarat).

  • eKYC Mismatch: If your photo has changed significantly since your Aadhaar was issued, visit a Common Service Centre (CSC) for biometric verification.

  • Cost: The card and application are 100% free. Do not pay any “agents” for registration.
