The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has evolved significantly as it enters its 11th impactful year in 2026. Designed to “Fund the Unfunded,” the scheme now offers a more robust ladder for entrepreneurs, ranging from street vendors to expanding small-scale manufacturers.

The most notable recent update is the enhancement of the loan limit to ₹20 Lakh through the introduction of the Tarun Plus category, providing much-needed capital for high-growth enterprises.

Understanding the Four Loan Categories

The scheme is structured to support a business at every stage of its lifecycle.

Category Loan Amount Target Audience
Shishu Up to ₹50,000 New startups and micro-entrepreneurs.
Kishore ₹50,001 to ₹5 Lakh Established units looking for initial growth.
Tarun ₹5 Lakh to ₹10 Lakh Small businesses scaling their operations.
Tarun Plus ₹10 Lakh to ₹20 Lakh High-growth units with a proven repayment track record.

Deep Dive: The New Tarun Plus Category

Introduced in the Union Budget 2024-25 and fully operational in 2026, Tarun Plus is the flagship expansion of the Mudra scheme.

  • Eligibility Requirement: Unlike other categories, Tarun Plus is specifically designed for entrepreneurs who have previously availed and successfully repaid a loan under the Tarun category.

  • Guarantee: These loans are covered under the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU), ensuring banks can lend without requiring third-party collateral.

Core Benefits & Key Features

  • Collateral-Free: No need to pledge land, gold, or property.

  • Mudra Card: A RuPay debit card provided for the working capital portion, allowing you to withdraw funds as needed and pay interest only on the used amount.

  • Financial Inclusion: Over 57.79 crore loans have been sanctioned since inception, with nearly two-thirds granted to women entrepreneurs.

  • Sector Coverage: Includes manufacturing, trading, service sectors, and allied agricultural activities (dairy, beekeeping, etc.).

Application Process (Step-by-Step)

1. Choose Your Portal

In 2026, applying digitally is the fastest route. You can use:

  • JanSamarth Portal: A single-window digital platform for all government-linked credit schemes.

  • Udyamimitra Portal: Dedicated to MSME credit needs.

  • Direct Bank Application: Visit any Public Sector Bank, Private Bank, or Regional Rural Bank (RRB).

2. Documentation Checklist

  • Identity & Address Proof: Aadhaar, PAN Card, Voter ID.

  • Business Proof: Udyam Registration (highly recommended), Trade License, or Shop Establishment Certificate.

  • Financial History: Bank statements for the last 6–12 months.

  • For Tarun/Tarun Plus: A Project Report detailing the estimated costs (machinery, inventory, interiors) and projected income.

3. Verification & Disbursement

The bank reviews your credit history (CIBIL score), business viability, and repayment capacity. Once satisfied, the amount is disbursed directly into your business account.

Latest Context

  • The ₹20 Lakh Limit: Many older guides still list the maximum limit as ₹10 Lakh. Since late 2024 and through 2026, the limit has officially been raised to ₹20 Lakh under Tarun Plus.

  • Interest Rates: Mudra loans do not have a “fixed” government rate; they are based on the bank’s MCLR (Marginal Cost of Funds Based Lending Rate) plus a specific spread.
