New Delhi. Wednesday, 27 May 2026

As intense summer heatwaves grip large portions of central, northern, and northwestern India—with temperatures in areas like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan soaring between 43°C and 47°C—Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a heartfelt public appeal. Moving beyond basic weather warnings, the Prime Minister is calling on citizens to prioritize safety, family vigilance, and community compassion during this challenging weather period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that while severe heatwave conditions remain dominant, a gradual abatement is expected toward the very end of May. Until relief arrives, protective daily measures are absolutely vital.

Key Safety Measures to Protect Yourself and Loved Ones

Following the Prime Minister’s recent public address, citizens are highly encouraged to adapt their daily routines to safeguard vulnerable individuals:

  • Hydrate Constantly and Proactively: Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Carry a reusable water bottle whenever you step outside your home.

  • Minimize Afternoon Exposure: Avoid heading outdoors during the peak heat window of the afternoon.

  • Protect the Elderly and Children: Young individuals should check in regularly on elderly parents, grandparents, and neighbors to ensure they are staying cool and well-rested.

Spotting and Responding to Heat Exhaustion

Ignoring early warning signs can cause conditions to rapidly deteriorate into a life-threatening heatstroke. The Prime Minister highlighted specific health symptoms that demand immediate attention:

  • Symptoms to Watch For: Dizziness, sudden nausea, severe headaches, and extreme, uncharacteristic fatigue.

  • Immediate First Aid Steps: If you or someone nearby exhibits these signs, quickly move them to a cool, shaded environment. Provide plenty of fluids, specifically water mixed with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to rapidly restore lost electrolytes.

A Call for Collective Care and Kindness

A defining element of the Prime Minister’s message is the power of community empathy to help ease the burden of the harsh summer climate.

“In weather like this, small acts of kindness go a long way. Let us extend our sensitivity to everyone around us, including our animal neighbors.”

  • Offer Water to Workers: If you see delivery executives, street vendors, or outdoor laborers working near your home or office, offer them a glass of clean, cool water.

  • Support Stray Animals and Birds: Extreme heat causes severe dehydration in urban wildlife. Citizens are requested to place small earthen bowls or clean containers of water on balconies, terraces, outer shop counters, or residential gates to provide a vital lifeline for thirsty birds and stray animals.
