“Amrit Vanam – Lungs of the City” Marks One of Chennai’s Largest Urban Afforestation Initiatives

Chennai, June 5, 2026: Demonstrating the power of collective action for environmental sustainability, Rotary International District 3234 successfully conducted its flagship environmental initiative, “Amrit Vanam – Lungs of the City,” on World Environment Day at the University of Madras, Taramani Campus. The ambitious drive witnessed the plantation of 15,000 trees in a single day, creating one of the largest coordinated urban afforestation efforts undertaken by Rotary in the region.

Organized by Rotary International District 3234 in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Madras, Rotary Club of Madras Central, and the District Rotaract Council, and in association with the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, the initiative aims to contribute significantly to Chennai’s green cover while laying the foundation for a thriving urban dense forest.

The event was graced by Dr. V. K. Rajeev, Hon’ble Minister for Environment, as the Chief Guest.His presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between government bodies and civic organizations in addressing environmental challenges.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. V. K. Rajeev highlighted the urgent need to eliminate the use of single-use plastics and encouraged individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable alternatives.

Leading the initiative was AKS Rtn. Vinod Saraogi, District Governor, Rotary International District 3234, whose vision and commitment to environmental stewardship have inspired several impactful sustainability projects across the district. The project was supported by Rotary leaders including Rtn. Ravi Sundaresan, DGND and Environment Chair; Dr. S. Armstrong, Member of the VC Convener Committee, University of Madras; Rtn. Nikhil Raj, President, Rotary Club of Madras; Rtn. Balakrishnan, President, Rotary Club of Madras Central; and Rtn. Rajasekaran G.S., Environment Co-Chair.

The plantation drive brought together hundreds of Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, Inner Wheel members, government representatives, environmental advocates, students, and volunteers who joined hands to create a greener future for the city.

Held under the inspiring theme “Growing Oxygen, Growing Hope,” the initiative serves as a powerful testament to the impact of community-driven environmental action. The newly planted urban forest is expected to contribute meaningfully to climate resilience and ecological well-being for generations to come.

The initiative also reinforced the importance of adopting environmentally responsible practices in daily life, including reducing dependence on single-use plastics and promoting sustainable waste management alongside efforts to expand urban green cover.

With the successful completion of this record-breaking plantation drive, Rotary District 3234 has reinforced its commitment to protecting the environment and creating sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
