Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar addressing global developers at the Google I/O Connect India 2026 event in Bengaluru, announcing the AI University.

Bengaluru. Wednesday, 15 July 2026

At the flagship Google I/O Connect India 2026 event held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar unveiled an aggressive, multi-layered technological roadmap. Solidifying Bengaluru’s title as the undisputed innovation capital of India, the state government announced the establishment of India’s first government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) University alongside state-of-the-art Green Data Centres.

“Our first ambition is to make Karnataka an AI-native state,” stated Chief Minister Shivakumar. “By AI-native, I do not mean using AI as a slogan. AI must help teachers teach better, doctors diagnose diseases earlier, farmers receive better advisory services, and small businesses compete confidently.”

Anchoring Global Talent: The 100-Acre AI University Hub

The centerpiece of this landmark policy is a sprawling, 100-acre world-class AI University campus slated for the Bengaluru Innovation Corridor. Recognizing that technological growth cannot remain centralized in a single metropolis, the state will implement a distributed regional model.

  • Main Hub: Bengaluru (100-Acre Integrated Campus)

  • Regional Satellite Campuses: Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Mysuru.

The university will offer specialized undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and executive programs focusing heavily on deep tech. The core curriculum is designed to adapt to rapid market changes:

[School Level (Class 6+)] ──> [Distributed Regional Campuses] ──> [100-Acre Bengaluru AI Hub]
(Coding & Computational) (Democratizing Tier-2 Talent) (Advanced R&D & Incubators)

The academic framework will span advanced domains including Generative AI, Robotics, Data Science, High-Performance Computing, Cybersecurity, and crucially, AI Ethics and Governance to champion responsible deployment.

Mitigating the Digital Carbon Footprint: Sustainable Infrastructure

Artificial intelligence requires massive compute power, which inherently increases energy consumption and cooling resource needs. To prevent the state’s AI push from derailing environmental sustainability milestones, Karnataka will establish two next-generation Green Data Centres.

One facility will be strategically positioned near Bengaluru, potentially in Hoskote, utilizing secondary-treated water from the BWSSB and solar power generated by the massive 2,000 MW Pavagada Solar Park. The second facility is earmarked for the coastal district of Mangaluru, unlocking access to alternative marine-cooling efficiency architectures.

Cultivating the Next Generation

In a bid to foster continuous, long-term technical capability, the state is introducing AI education and computational thinking into the mandatory school curriculum starting from Class 6. By integrating foundational coding principles and digital literacy early, the state aims to organically prepare its youth for the rapidly advancing global digital economy.

Concurrently, a centralized AI Innovation Hub will act as a physical crucible—bringing together researchers from prestigious institutions like IISc, venture capitalists, and startups to translate academic findings into scalable public sector solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Where will the new AI University be located?

A: The primary, world-class university hub will span a 100-acre campus in Bengaluru, complemented by fully integrated regional satellite campuses in Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Mysuru to promote inclusive regional tech growth.

Q2: What makes the proposed data centres “green”?

A: Unlike conventional, energy-intensive server plants, Karnataka’s green data centres will rely on renewable energy integration (such as the Pavagada Solar Park) and eco-friendly cooling loops powered by secondary-treated water to minimize environmental impact.

Q3: When will students begin learning AI in Karnataka schools?

A: The government plans to introduce basic AI modules, coding fundamentals, and computational thinking principles into the public and state school curriculum beginning at Class 6.
