An 11-day photographic journey across Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kamakura and Kyoto, capturing Japan’s autumn landscapes, culture and everyday life
Chennai, September 2026: Award winning photographer Dwarakesh Iyengar, along with international photography mentor Priya Banik, is curating “Autumn Colours of Japan,” an immersive 11 day photography tour taking participants through some of Japan’s most visually captivating landscapes and cultural spaces from 21 November to 1 December 2026.
With a group size limited to 12 participants, the tour is designed for photographers of all levels as well as curious travellers who enjoy exploring new places and cultures. The journey will cover Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, Kamakura and Kyoto, combining landscape, cityscape, street and cultural photography with opportunities for socialising and exploring Japan’s culinary traditions.
For Dwarakesh Iyengar, the inspiration for the tour comes from his first visit to Japan during autumn. While cherry blossom season is widely celebrated, he describes Japan in autumn as equally special, with autumn foliage surrounding old temples and landscapes creating a spectacular visual experience.
Japan’s distinctive geography also offers varied photographic opportunities. The tour will explore the dynamic cityscapes of Tokyo, the vistas surrounding Mount Fuji and the changing autumn colours across Kyoto. Participants will photograph everything from serene temples and traditional villages to neon-lit streets, food markets and everyday urban life.
The photography itinerary begins in Tokyo, before moving towards the Mount Fuji region. Participants will photograph sunset and star trails around Lake Motosuko, explore Lake Tanuki, visit Shiraito Falls and Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba, and experience the Fuji region at a relaxed pace.
Back in Tokyo, the group will explore teamLab Borderless, Tokyo Skytree, Omoide Yokocho, Nezu Shrine, Harajuku, Shibuya Crossing, Akihabara and Rikugien Garden, offering opportunities to photograph both the city’s energy and its quieter spaces.
A day trip to Kamakura will bring the group to the Great Buddha of Kamakura, traditional streets, temples, local markets, the Enoden Line and the surrounding coastline.
The journey then continues by Shinkansen to Kyoto, where participants will explore the city’s atmospheric streets, Pontocho Alley, Arashiyama, Adashino Nenbutsu-ji, Otagi Nenbutsu-ji and Yusai-tei Gallery. The Kyoto experience will also include Gion, Eikan-do Temple and Nishiki Market, combining autumn landscapes, cultural spaces, food and street photography.
The final day includes an early morning visit to Enko-ji Temple, allowing participants to photograph its autumn colours in tranquil morning light before concluding the photographic journey.
Alongside the travel experience, the tour will offer practical photography guidance covering RAW, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure, composition, lens choice and focal length, panoramic photography, long exposures and mobile photography. Photographic guidance will be available upon request throughout the tour.
Evenings will provide an opportunity for participants to socialise, discuss their photographs and experiences, and explore Japan’s local food scene.
Dwarakesh Iyengar brings experience across street and landscape photography, with a practice rooted in observation and quiet storytelling. A postgraduate in photography from Light and Life Academy, he has travelled through 23 countries across India, Central Asia, Japan and Europe. He has previously curated and led photography tours through Uzbekistan and now brings this experience to Japan.
Joining him is Priya Banik, a visual storyteller, photography educator and mentor with over two decades of experience. She holds a research-based Master’s degree in Photography from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom, and has worked across different countries with internationally acclaimed photographers and institutions. She has also mentored emerging photographers through workshops, fellowships and immersive travel-based learning experiences.
The tour is priced at ₹1,95,000 per person, with accommodation in a private twin share room, transportation throughout the tour and entrance fees included. International and domestic flights, meals and beverages, travel and equipment insurance, visa fees and arrangements, local guide services and personal insurance are not included.
