CHENNAI, INDIA,16 OCT 2026 — In a major stride towards preventive healthcare, Rotary International District (RID) 3234, in collaboration with the Madhav Diabetes Centre, officially launched its flagship health pledge initiative, “Swasthya Sankalp,” at the Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School premises. Aligned with the global NCD movement’s focus theme “Time to Lead,” the event was executed as a massive hybrid program, bringing together more than 1,000 students from various Interact schools and Rotaract colleges participating both online and physically at the Asan Memorial School. This widespread community launch successfully rolled out a life-changing health pledge focused on lifestyle prevention targeted directly at the younger generation.
During the landmark event, the children took the core *’Swasthya Sankalp’* pledge, officially stepping up as ‘Health Warriors’ by committing themselves to simple yet critical daily habits that form the foundation of long-term wellness. Standing together across both physical and digital platforms, the students took a collective vow to make healthier choices: eating nutritious food , playing sports to stay active, sleeping eight hours in the nights, reducing screen time in favor of outdoor activities, maintaining a healthy mind, and saying a firm “No” to harmful substances like tobacco and alcohol. To honor their commitment, individual certificates and prizes were distributed to the participating students, cementing their roles as active ambassadors for health. This vital movement marks a monumental expansion of the district’s non-communicable disease (NCD) wing, building upon more than two decades of intensive ground-level health camps and free medical consultations led by the Madhav Diabetes Centre. Moving the frontline of defense to the youth, the campaign draws inspiration from a poignant UNICEF health mandate: “Childhood is our frontline in the fight against NCDs. What we do today will decide India’s future health.”
The event was graced by Chief Guest and District Governor Rtn. Suresh Jain, who commended the initiative for perfectly mirroring his district mantra of DSJ—Dharma, Seva, and Jivan. Guest of Honor Dr. Prashant Krishna, Director of the Prashant Group of Hospitals, emphasized the clinical urgency of building strong medical-community coalitions to counter the silent rise of metabolic disorders.
Key leadership addresses highlighted the extensive strategy behind the regional campaign. Rtn. Shyamala, Chairperson of the Asan Memorial Group of Schools, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the critical role educational institutions play in anchoring civic and health transformations. Rtn. Vrinda Deepak, Chairperson of NCD for RID 3234, spearheaded the presentation, outlining the roadmap for scaling the pledge across the region to protect the upcoming generation. Reinforcing the continuous support structure, Rtn. Dr. A. P. Maheshwar, Director of Community Services (Health) for RID 3234, and Rtn. Sarada Ramani, Director of Youth Services for RID 3234, spoke on the absolute necessity of aligning student-led platforms with community healthcare initiatives to create lasting habit changes.
Regionally, the core operational blueprint for RID 3234 was conceptualized by Dr. M. C. Deepak, leading Diabetologist at Apollo Hospitals and NCD team luminary. The launch follows the remarkable success of last year’s youth-centric beach walkathon, ‘Saiyam,’ which was held at Besant Nagar Beach to promote early habit transformation.
A key highlight of the event was the premiere of a high-energy campaign theme song titled “Nee Naala Pulla Da.” The teachers, faculty, and energetic student body of Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School electrified the venue by performing an enthusiastically choreographed dance sequence.
Reflecting the auspicious spirit of Navratri and promoting the core campaign tenet of nutritional awareness, the children were served pure, wholesome Satvik refreshments.
The event closed with a massive expression of gratitude to the organizing committee, recognizing the invaluable support of School Principal Mr. Vishwanathan, along with dedicated district officials, school faculty, the fellow Rotarians on the organising committee, and the tireless volunteers of the Madhav Diabetes Centre who worked together to bring this campaign to fruition.
