Why Chennai’s Young Professionals Need to Take Orthopaedic Health Seriously

By Dr. Shriram Krishnamoorthy, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon

For many young professionals, a typical workday involves long hours in front of a computer, endless virtual meetings, and very little movement. While this routine may seem harmless, it is increasingly becoming one of the biggest contributors to orthopaedic problems among people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Not long ago, I treated a 32-year-old IT professional from Chennai who came in complaining of severe neck pain and restricted movement. There was no injury or accident. His condition had developed gradually after years of sitting at a workstation for eight to ten hours every day. Like many others, he assumed the discomfort would eventually disappear. Instead, it became progressively worse.

Cases like his are becoming alarmingly common.

A Shift in the Age Profile of Orthopaedic Patients

One of the most noticeable trends in my practice today is the increasing number of younger patients presenting with conditions that were traditionally associated with older adults. Cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc problems, frozen shoulder, persistent back pain, and joint stiffness are no longer confined to people in their retirement years.

The modern workplace has changed the way we work—but it has also changed the way our bodies age.

Chennai’s expanding IT parks, financial institutions, and corporate offices have created a workforce that spends a significant portion of the day seated. Unfortunately, our muscles and joints were never designed for such prolonged inactivity.

Why Prolonged Sitting Is Harmful

Many people underestimate what hours of continuous sitting can do to the body. Remaining seated for long periods, particularly with poor posture, places excessive stress on the spine. At the same time, the muscles responsible for supporting the back and maintaining posture gradually become weaker due to lack of use.

I recently examined a 28-year-old marketing professional who had developed persistent lower back pain that affected both her work and daily routine. Investigations revealed early degeneration of the spinal discs, an issue once considered uncommon in someone her age.

When movement becomes limited day after day, the effects build slowly. Reduced flexibility, weakened muscles, compressed nerves, and worn spinal discs eventually begin to interfere with everyday life.

Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You

Early symptoms are often brushed aside as simple fatigue or work-related stress. However, recurring discomfort should not be ignored.

Seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Frequent neck or lower back stiffness
  • Pain that worsens after long hours at your desk
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms or legs
  • Shoulder discomfort that keeps returning
  • Difficulty sitting, standing, or walking comfortably for long periods

Recognising these warning signs early can help prevent more serious complications later.

Small Changes Can Prevent Bigger Problems

The encouraging news is that many work-related orthopaedic issues are preventable.

Simple habits such as standing up every hour, stretching regularly, maintaining an ergonomic workstation, strengthening your core muscles, and staying physically active outside office hours can significantly reduce strain on the spine and joints.

If pain persists despite these measures, seeking professional evaluation at an early stage can prevent long-term damage and, in many cases, avoid the need for surgery.

Prioritise Your Musculoskeletal Health

Career growth often comes with demanding schedules, but your health should not be the price you pay for professional success.

Your spine supports every movement you make, and caring for it today will determine how comfortably you live tomorrow. Persistent neck, back, or joint pain is not something to simply “live with.” Early diagnosis and timely treatment remain the most effective ways to preserve mobility, productivity, and overall quality of life.
