Hyderabad, 2nd May 2026Former Defence Minister the late Dr. Mallikarjun has received recognition by the prestigious Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In an exemplary show of international solidarity, the university, which ranks amongst the topmost in the world has named a newly built terrace at the Bologna campus of SAIS Europe as in Italy, “Dr. Mallikarjun Terrace“. The terrace is an extension of the university building infrastructure where SAIS students, faculty members, visiting scholars and dignitaries will mingle. It is to be open to the public as well.

Dr. Mallikarjun had entered public life as a student leader who spearheaded the Telangana agitation of 1969 and went on to serve the nation in his capacity as central minister handling such crucial portfolios as Defence and Railways. He was elected to the parliament six times, twice from Medak and four times from Mahabubnagar. Towards the last phase of his life he had founded and led Congress Forum for Telangana for the cause of statehood to Telangana, of which he had been a proponent throughout the decades of his service. It is noteworthy that Johns Hopkins University is at the cutting edge of global research especially in the field of medicine, while Dr. Mallikarjun had studied medicine as a student at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad.

Dr. Mallikarjun‘s son Manu Mallikarjun obtained his MA in International Relations at SAIS and as an alumnus has collaborated with his alma mater for this unique endeavor to honor the Indian leader. Manu was an elected member of the Student Government Association (SGA) during the first year of his studies at SAIS in Bologna, and he was in Washington, D.C. for the second year.

The unveiling ceremony of the plaque took place in the presence of SAIS Europe Rector Renaud Dehousse and several of Manu’s classmates who had gathered for the event at the campus in Bologna. Speaking at the occasion, Manu expressed that this gesture of mutual goodwill demonstrates that “we are human, before we are nations and peoples. It may be symbolic, but it is etched in stone.” The plaque reads: “In memory of former Minister and Member of the Indian Parliament Dr. Mallikarjun (1941-2002), whose dedication to public service and leadership—a journey that began at Osmania Medical College where he served as Students’ Union President—endures as a source of inspiration.”
