The Government of India has issued an urgent public advisory warning citizens about an aggressive online phishing campaign. Cybercriminals are using deceptive email accounts to distribute fraudulent fake LPG dealership offers, tricking individuals into identity theft and massive financial fraud.
According to official advisories tracked via the Press Information Bureau (PIB), unsuspecting citizens are receiving targeted emails from the address [email protected]. These communications falsely claim to offer lucrative opportunities for setting up cooking gas dealerships and distributorships. Authorities have categorically stated that these messages are completely fraudulent and have no association with legitimate Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), or Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL).
Spotting the Trap: How the Scam Operates
Fraudsters use a technique known as typo-squatting—registering domain names that look almost identical to official portals to deceive users. In this case, the fake email address introduces minor typos (such as adding an extra ‘a’ in lpgvitarakchayaan) that go unnoticed at first glance.
Once a target engages with the email, the attackers typically execute a multi-stage trap:
-
The Bait: Offering immediate approval for an exclusive rural or urban LPG distributorship.
-
The Hook: Demanding personal documentation, land records, and Aadhaar card details for “verification” (identity theft).
-
The Sting: Demanding processing fees, security deposits, or licensing charges under the guise of official registration costs.
Official PIB Warning: Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies have not appointed any third-party agencies or private individuals to collect money or award dealerships on their behalf. Legitimate selection processes strictly follow a computerized draw format.
Check Before You Pay: Official vs. Fraudulent Sources

Critical Safety Checklist for Citizens
If you are actively seeking a business opportunity in the energy sector, remember these five core defense rules:
-
Verify the URL: Ensure the website ends with standard government-sanctioned domains or matches the official spelling strictly.
-
Protect Your Identity: Never send scans of your PAN card, Aadhaar, or bank statements via unverified email interactions.
-
Zero Advance Fees: If an unsolicited email demands money to expedite an allotment, it is 100% a scam.
-
Do Not Click Links: Avoid downloading attachments or clicking embedded links within messages originating from
[email protected]. -
Report Immediately: If you encounter or fall victim to financial cyber fraud, register your complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at
