Philately reflect culture, while letter writing expresses emotions-Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav

Letters remain a powerful medium of warmth and human connection even in the digital age-Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav

Postal Stamps are the carriers of a nation’s civilization, culture, and heritage. In this era of social media, the younger generation can be made more creative by encouraging them to pursue hobbies such as philately and letter writing. These views were expressed by Postmaster General, North Gujarat Region, Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav, during a programme organised in Ahmedabad on October 12 to mark ‘Fun with Philately Day’ as part of the National Postal Week celebrations. On this occasion, Meera P. Thakkar, a Class VIII student of Maharaja Agrasen Vidyalaya, Ahmedabad, was felicitated by the Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav with a cheque of ₹25,000 and a Certificate of Appreciation for securing first position in the Gujarat Circle in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter-Writing Competition 2026. The international letter writing competition was organised on the subject “Why human connection matters in a digital world” and witnessed the participation of a total of 1,796 students from various schools across Gujarat Circle. Among the participants, Meera P. Thakkar of Maharaja Agrasen Vidyalaya, Ahmedabad, secured first position; Keshavi D. Joshi of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan V. M. Public School, Vadodara, secured second position; and Dixit T. Rabari of Sariyad Kumar Primary School, Patan, secured third position. Dr. Parthiv Kanubhai Thakkar, father of Meera P. Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav said that letters continue to hold a special significance even in the digital age, as they powerfully convey human emotions, warmth, and personal connections. Philately, or stamp collecting, is an engaging medium that connects students with the history, art, culture, and heritage of India and the world. Philately is widely known as the “King of Hobby and Hobby of King”, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to collect stamps on a wide variety of subjects. In an era of evolving communications, where the younger generation is increasingly drawn towards social media, engaging children in letter writing and philately has become particularly important. To promote philately, India Post organises various initiatives and programmes, including philatelic exhibitions, Philately Deposit Accounts, My Stamp, Deen Dayal SPARSH Scholarship Scheme, Dhai Akhar Letter Writing Competition, and the Universal Postal Union International Letter-Writing Competition.

Senior Superintendent of Post Offices Shri Shishir Kumar said that, as part of ‘Fun with Philately Day’ under National Postal Week–2026, Ahmedabad City Division organised a special pop-up event titled “Digital Detox – Reconnect Through Letters” at Kitabi Angan Café, Sindhu Bhavan, Ahmedabad. The event was a meaningful initiative towards connecting people through letters and promoting the legacy of India Post

During the programme, the welcome address was delivered by Senior Superintendent of Post Offices Shri Shishir Kumar, the vote of thanks by Assistant Director Alpesh Shah, and the programme was anchored by Abhishek Pithadiya.
