The Telangana High Court on January 7, 2026, ordered status quo on the proposed allotment of one acre of government land to the Waqf Board for a Muslim graveyard at Borabanda, under the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, following sustained local protests and a legal challenge.
The interim direction was issued during a lunch motion hearing after objections were raised against the allotment. The land, estimated to be worth around ₹30 crore, is situated in a densely populated residential locality and lies adjacent to Hindu temples.

Residents of Borabanda, largely from the Hindu community, staged protests opposing the government’s move. Protesters argued that the land should be utilised for essential public infrastructure and demanded the establishment of a permanent police station, a government college, and a government hospital to meet the needs of the growing locality.

The protesters alleged that the Congress-led state government initiated proceedings to allocate the land without adequate public consultation. They also targeted senior Congress leader and Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, asserting that government land cannot be allotted arbitrarily and must serve the broader public interest.
Tension prevailed in the area as demonstrations continued, with slogans raised against the state government’s decision. Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
With the High Court’s status quo order, all further action on the land allotment has been temporarily halted until the matter is heard in detail. The case is expected to come up for further hearing in the coming days.
The controversy traces back to a promise made by the Indian National Congress to allocate dedicated land for a Muslim graveyard during the Jubilee Hills by-elections held in 2025. The constituency has significant Muslim population, and the Congress candidate Naveen Yadav won the seat, which had fallen vacant following the death of a BRS leader. Protesters have alleged that the proposed allotment amounts to a quid pro quo for electoral support.
Local residents further claim that the land was earlier earmarked for hospital purposes linked to Erragadda, and allege that the present move by the Telangana Congress government represents a reversal of that intent despite sustained resistance from the local population. The issue has also put the spotlight on the role of the state government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, as the political and legal battle over the Borabanda land continues.
