‘World Post Day’ raises awareness of the role of postal services from everyday life to global development — Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav
‘World Post Day’ will be celebrated globally on October 9. In India, keeping in view the evolving role of the India Post and the wide range of services being provided to citizens, ‘National Postal Week’ will be observed from October 9 to 15. Sharing this information, Postmaster General, North Gujarat Region, Ahmedabad, Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav said that the celebrations will focus on the growing integration of technology and innovation in postal operations and Department’s continued efforts in making postal services more accessible and convenient. With a greater focus on financial inclusion and citizen-centric services, emphasis will also be laid on expanding the customer base.
Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav said that during National Postal Week, each day will focus on a specific product or service, with various activities and programmes being organised accordingly. October 9 will be observed as World Post Day, October 12 as ‘Fun with Philately Day’, October 13 as Financial Inclusion and Citizen-Centric Services Day, October 14 as Mails and Parcels Day, and October 15 as ‘Technology and Innovation Day’. This year, the theme of World Post Day is ‘World Post Day: One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities’.
The purpose of ‘World Post Day’ is to create awareness about the role of the Postal Department in the everyday life of people and businesses, as well as their contribution to global, social and economic development. Renowned as distinguished writer, Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav mentioned in his book “India Post : 150 Glorious Years” that, with the vision of realizing the concept of ‘One World–One Postal System’, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established in Bern, Switzerland, on October 9, 1874, with the aim of establishing a uniform postal system across the world. India was the first Asian nation to become a member of the UPU on July 1, 1876. Subsequently, at the Universal Postal Union Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969, October 9 was officially declared to be observed as ‘World Post Day’.
Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav added that during National Postal Week, emphasis will be laid on increasing revenue generation through extensive promotion of postal services and expansion of customer services. October 9 will be observed as ‘World Post Day’. On October 12, ‘Fun with Philately Day’ will be celebrated with various activities aimed at connecting students with postal services and philately, including philatelic exhibitions, My Stamp, interactive and awareness programmes in schools, visits to post offices and philatelic bureaux, quiz, Dhai Akhar Letter Writing Competition, Deen Dayal SPARSH Scholarship Scheme. A philately workshop and group discussion with philatelists will also be organised at an N-GEN Post Office. On October 13,
‘Financial Inclusion and Citizen-Centric Services Day’ will focus on Post Office Savings Bank, Postal Life Insurance, Aadhaar camps, etc., through activities such as Dak Chaupal and Nukkad Natak. On October 14, ‘Mails and Parcels Day’, a customer meet will be held for bulk customers to familiarise them with the new initiatives undertaken in the field of mails and parcels, while sorting contest will also be organised for employees at Railway Mail offices. On October 15, ‘Technology and Innovation Day’ Technology Quiz will be conducted for employees and customers. On the same day, a nationwide Postathon Walk/Run will be organised for promoting the theme ‘One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities’ to the masses.
