The iconic Beating Retreat ceremony at the Attari–Wagah Border is adjusting its schedule to beat the heat. Starting May 1, 2026, the Border Security Force (BSF) has revised the daily parade timings to ensure a safer and more pleasant experience for the thousands of patriotic spectators who flock to the Amritsar border every evening.
New Ceremony Timings
Effective from today, the ceremony schedule has shifted forward to accommodate the late summer sunset and rising temperatures.
-
New Timing: 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM
-
Previous Timing: 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM
-
Recommended Arrival: 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM
The BSF clarified that these adjustments are seasonal. As days get longer and the heatwave intensifies in Punjab, moving the event by 30 minutes provides much-needed relief to both the visitors in the open-air galleries and the personnel performing the high-energy drills.
Why the Timing Was Changed
According to BSF officials, the decision is primarily driven by weather conditions:
-
Heatwave Management: With temperatures often soaring in May, the delay helps avoid the peak afternoon sun.
-
Daylight Alignment: The ceremony is traditionally tied to the sunset, during which the national flags of India and Pakistan are simultaneously lowered.
-
Crowd Safety: The extra time allows for a more orderly entry process during the cooler part of the evening.
A Spectacle of National Pride
The Beating Retreat remains the highlight of any trip to Amritsar. The ceremony features:
-
Synchronized Drills: Sharp, rhythmic marching by BSF jawans and Pakistan Rangers.
-
High-Kick Display: The legendary aggressive maneuvers and “eye-to-eye” stares that symbolize the border’s intensity.
-
Flag Lowering: A somber yet precise ritual where the flags are folded and the gates are closed for the night.
-
Patriotic Atmosphere: The air is filled with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram,” creating an electrifying experience.
Visitor Guidelines for May 2026
If you are planning to attend, keep these essential tips in mind:
-
Entry is Free: No tickets are required, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
